The Unspeakable

I find it funny that in the English language we have words that mustn’t be spoken, yet we all know these words, and if we say them by their first letter we have the exact word pop into our minds. How often have you heard a news anchor saying something like, “And he used racial slurs calling African Americans in the audience the ‘N’ word.” We all figured out what he said by that clue.

What about the “F” word? Just by calling it “the F word” doesn’t make the word go away. It just makes the listener imagine the word and possibly placing greater emphasis on it. It’s kind of like someone dying their hair bright pink and then telling people not to look at them.

Every once in a while I’ll hear a child or an elderly lady refer to the “B” word. Showtime has a show called “The L Word.”

Now, I really want to understand exactly what women have against the “C” word. As a male I have been called a Dick, a Prick, a Pecker and an asshole. I’ve even been called the “C” word. I’m not offended by any of it. So ladies, why so sensitive? It’s a great word and I want to use it…often.

It just seems odd that there are words out there that we dare not use. I also find it funny how some words can become main-stream, like "Sucks" and "Blows". "Pissed" is even mainstream. When I was a kid these were really vulgar terms; ones you wouldn't say to Mom.

So, should we free our tongues now, or continue the slow evolution to eventual acceptability of the words that are presently taboo?

I'm all for swearing loudly and often, but "the C word" is one beyond my use. When used to describe anatomy, I am not as easily offended, but when called that as a name... not cool. Hell, I know some drunk Irishmen that won't even use that word!

But why? It's such a great word! It flows off the tongue (Pardon the pun) very easily. It has a hard sound at the beginning and end. It's just a damn good word.

I often wonder this as well. Why are certain words okay and others not? Are they all not just a bunch of letters put together to mean something?
Yes, words can be very powerful, but only as powerful as we want them to be.
As far as the "c" word goes - I find offense by some of the people who say the word - not the word itself. It is a fun word to say, but it's the power that we've given it that upsets people, I think.
Maybe you and I should start saying and posting about it all the time? Then it might lose some of it's power.
Cunt, cunt, cunt, cunt, cunt.

I wonder how the French would speak the word?

I do not mean to hijack this article topic to the topic of Cunt alone so forgive me. But I could not find Cunt in my Dictionary.

The word seems to imply discust and contempt. Almost as harsh as Rat-Bastard (am I allowed to say that?)

The unspeakable! Thank you guy. I like todays image as well.

I have no answer. I don't think I've ever met a curse word that I didn't like. That said, I kinda like that most women are so offended by the C word. Gives me ammunition for when I WANT to offend.

The French probably can't say it because it is derived from Middle English. ;-)

Interestingly enough, the word "cunt" is a couple hundred years older than "fuck."

[Origin: 1275–1325; ME cunte; c. ON kunta, OFris, MLG, MD kunte]

Trish, sorry this post should have come with a warning for Canadians. Though I'm sure Moosehead will come up with some Canadian French term that means something like "Entrance of Wonderment."

Amaya, I'm liking you right now.

Syd, I've heard you use it as a term of enderament.

Port, it's the least I could do for you after supplying me with my next sick day photo.

Rich, always the schollar. Actually I checked it out in the Stuart Berg Flexner books, but I didn't want to ruin the post.

But Trish, how come it's OK to call a man a dick, prick, pecker, peckerhead , hard-on. Men have no recourse. HArdly seems fair. See my point? (Boy am I going to get chewed out for this reply)

"Entrance of Wonderrment"??? What the fuck??? It's called a plote - like pilot without the i.

A guy can be called a fucking cunt if he deserves it and this is acceptable. Now, a woman called by the same name will be upset whether she deserves it or not. They really hate being called a bitch too but this pales in comparison to cunt.I mean...if it walks like a cunt and talks like a cunt and...well...it must be a cunt. I hope it never loses its power cause then we would have to find another word to call them when they are cunts.
Like the difference between bitch and slut. A slut fucks everybody but a bitch fucks everybody but you. Subtle eh? Love them nuances!

I would guess its because pricks have been able to dominate cunts for the last 1000 years therefore the former word is one of power and the latter one of weakness. Words can wound and words can create illusions of power. Look at history. We hardly know the truth of it due to it being written by the victor. Often we have been doomed to repeating it due to the fact we don't really know what happened and therefore couldn't learn from the mistakes.
Words are more than just a bunch of letters. They can incite people to action. Just look at what happened with Hitler's or Marx's books. Look at the Bible or the Quran. You have the power to create environments conducive to growth, war, education, health or utter destruction, with words carefully crafted together, imho.

I love you Canadians! Really I do, and thanks for the "Plote" Moosehead. I'll be using that elsewhere ; )

Anonymous has an excellent point about the powerful and the victor, except when it comes to the Confederate flag. They lost that war but they are still flying that somebitch.

The C word is "Canadian?"

As you know from my blog, I am on the front lines of having taboo words used so often that they lose their shock value. I adored the Osbournes! I have tempered my language because of kids and the sensibilities of others, but use them in my writing (it's not even conscious, they just flow) and when I injure myself.

Bernie Ward of KGO says he's so tired of the Confederate Flag-wavers that he's ready to say, "It's all right. You can go now. We tried, but it's just not working out," to the entire South.

As I glide along with the sun on my back, the warm draft lofts me yet higher, as I gaze at the clutter below.
Yet my mind runs clear.
Love, friends, hope for tommorow..
..and yet again; wind anew, beneath my wings....
Let my mind forever run clear.

Gearhead, are you near death or have you been listening to Bette Middler again?

Mo3, hey, don't be messing with my chances of ever going to Canada again ;) I'm always surprised how many people tell me they listen to KGO. I used to listen years ago. I don't miss it so mych now that I have voices in my head.

Oh oh...Gearhead's in trouble with the shrooms again and Guy is hearing voices. Must be the wet season and harvest time on the west coast...

Problem? What problem? It's only a problem if you can't afford it

Very interesting discussion...

No self respecting woman would ever use this word.

It is vile.

It is not a word that talks about anything nice about the female body but only what is repulsive. Perhaps this is why it it seems so taboo (to me).

Like it's nasty alter ego...

There are so many great things to spend our energy talking and thinking about and while I am all for dramatic nuances...there has to be something more effective to usew than this word.

Sort of like my theory that the overuse of the F word is just verbal laziness...if someone wants to really shock or wow..use the intellect to come up with something that does the trick...

No pun intended...

No pun recognized ; )

Sometimes it just feels good to let it rip. Maybe I'll shout some foul language the next time I drive somewhere. That should feel good.
