Is Astoria The Coolest Small Town?

I was with a group of people the other night and some "cheer leader" reminded us that we all needed to vote often for Astoria to be elected the coolest small town is some magazine that no one ever reads. Immediately the majority of the people said "NEVER!"

Points were brought up (some by me) that this could over inflate real estate prices, they could feature the Safeway Hole, the abandoned storefronts, our fine transient population, lack of industry, the over abundance of minimum wage service jobs.

Do we really want "Budget Travelers" here? To me a budget traveler is someone with little or no money to spend and one who can live up to the local destiny, "Come on vacation, leave on probation." They can't be away from home long without access to a Walmart. Shoot, if they have an RV they can camp at Walmart when it comes to Warrenton. For those of you that think Warrenton, I mean Whoreinton is going to enforce their no camping code all a big box store has to do is flash some money and city council will roll over and spread their cheeks as always.

Oh good, I get to leave the first comments. I was thinking about this exact issue this morning while getting ready for work. If I was vacationing would I really want to make Astoria my destination vacation spot? No. We have many great restaurants but not a reason to spend money to come here. The scenery is quite beautiful but you can only enjoy that for so long. A river walk that looks unkempt, scary people residing along the river walk, vacant buildings throughout the town, Flavel House (please), Heritage Museum (please), don't forget the darling sea lions....

Astoria is not the coolest town but damn it has some great restaurants, beautiful vista views, and a new sink hole for traveler's viewing pleasure.

I've never been to Lewisberg WV, hell, I'd never even heard of it until all this crapola started up, but it's definitely my new favorite place. Astoria used to be cool. In fact, it used to be real cool. But those days are long gone right along with lots of people, places and things that made it cool. Now what we have here now is some faux Astoria-like some evil alien has hijacked the body and soul of this place.

You mean that Astoria isn't already the vacation mecca of the great Pacific Northwet? Dammit! I spent all that time on travelocity looking for the best room rates for nothing?

Hoo! My word today was "proberho". I aint touching that one.

I remember when Cannon Beach was a cool town. It was pretty much the Round Table, the bakery, Bills and the Driftwood and a couple shops. Now look at it.

Astoria is a cool town. Astoria has been in the vacation mecca for quite sometime.
Hey, whats wrong with Budget travel? Have you checked their prices? A big company that offer cheap, cheap prices for travel.
The serious problem in our town is the justice system and the man who controls it.
Yes, we have a hole, yes, we have some buildings in bad shape.
The people here are trying, our town was stagnet 25yrs ago, most all downtown was vacant, no reason to shop locally , very few stores to shop at.

Come on vacation, leave on probation.
Just this month Andrew's and Steve's and the Pier 11 restaurant. I wonder how much more will close before the magazine is published.

Interesting, it seems very few people I've come in contact with actually think it's a good idea to vote for this town as the coolest town. Your comments seem to reflect this as well.

Awww, Astoria came in second place-Aw shucks, now we gotta live with the shame of being the second coolest small town in the USA. Or, as someone else so eloquently put it, Astoria is the First Loser.

But but but... the Goonies was filmed there!

I'm really intrigued by the Safeway Hole. When did it show up and what are the prospects for it going away? And how big is it?

So were a bunch of other crappy movies.

The hole just happened, probably back in December. Probably the size of five parking spaces. There used to be a Safeway supermarket on the spot. They raised the building and never chopped up the floor. So after years of the rain the beams under the concrete gave way. As for now it is only being filled with jokes and political animosity.
