The Punishment

I can’t believe how many people I see still driving while yacking on the phone. Both Washing and Oregon made this illegal, but people are still too lazy to pull over for their non emergent conversations.

Maybe the fine isn’t high enough. Maybe a remedy is to not only raise the fine but make offenders exchange their phones for something that looks like the early cell phones. Or better yet...

I was stopped at a light last week, when I looked in the rearview mirror to see a guy pulling up behind me holding his cell phone to his ear and drinking coffee. Guess his car was specially equiped to not need any hands to drive.

A couple of weeks ago I was stopped at a light and a car drove up right behind me and very nearly ended up with my bumper hitch in his radiator. When I looked back to see who the idiot was, turned out to be a young (20's-ish) cop talking on his cell phone. WTS? I think anyone caught talking and driving more than once should have their phone confiscated and destroyed.

Happens here all the time. People just don't give a lovely!
An x-boss of mine swore up and down that he was even MORE alert when he was driving and using his phone. Idiot!

Anon, it would be a cool feature if cars would power down for a half hour when someone releases their grip on the wheel. It would be like a penalty box for idiots.

Darev, oddly in Oregon police and taxi drivers are exempt from the law.

Tango, Rat Bastards...all of em.

Very timely post, as I just listened to an interview on NPR with a Pulitzter prize winner, discussing this...it made me think about it more.

It's illegal in CA too, and that famous plastic surgeon just died careening over a cliff while texting about his border collie. No thanks!
