Unbalanced Advantage

I recently found myself looking through a couple year old local publication called the Dried Salmon County Resource Guide for Human Services. In this publication I found that there are 58 churches in Dried Salmon County. There are 22 churches in Astoria. So I went to the phone book and I looked something up in the yellow pages. There are only 12 taverns in the county and only 6 taverns in Astoria. Something isn’t right with these numbers. A possible compromise is in the photo above.

What you are observing is frequently what I call the "Jesus Factor."

You can tell how a community is doing based on the number of bars in proportion to the number of churches.

You see, people don't typically get religion when times are good, the get drinks.

At the same time a happy, economically viable, stable community will always have more taverns than churches, hopefully around 2:1.

Of course, I could just be cynical.

Of course its all in how you look at it, but in clatsop county the glass is ALWAYS half full! You are too damn funny. Include in your search the word Lounge, club and lodge. Here is what I found for drinking establishments in Astoria alone:

Geno's
Annies
The Desdemona Club
Hong Kong's Lounge
Lattitudes Tavern
The Schooner
Labor Temple
Merry Time Lounge
The Chart Room
The Voodoo Room
The Wet Dog
Lower Columbia Bowl
Golden Star Lounge
Portway Tavern
Red Lion Lounge
Pier 11 Lounge
Ship Inn Restaurant & Lounge
The Public House
Panda, Good Luck, Lucky Star Lounge
Silver Salmon Restaurant & Lounge
Moose Lodge
Eagles Lodge
BPOE
American Legion

Sort of in the way of the barroom saturday night crawl. And these are just the establishments whose job is to give you at least one beer. This doesn't count those establishments (like all of the mexican restuarants and other new eateries) who serve beers, wine and liquors with the meals. I think, right in Astoria alone, not to count all of the bars, lounges and taverns that Seaside, Cannon Beach, Warrenton/Hammond, Knappa, Elsie/Jewell, Hamlett, and Gearhart along with their lodges, golf clubs and country clubs we are far from being outnumbered by the puritans. clatsop county's cups more than runneth over!

Ahh, there is hope. Thanks for restorring my faith and order to the universe. How ever when you look deeper into the churches you will find that there are lots of little bible study groups, clubs and camps...OK now I'm throwing the balance off again. I'll just stick with what you presented : ) Thanks for taking the time to research this.
